Welcome to VDL
Value Don’t Lie is a premium special situations + value investing newsletter.
What I focus on
Most of my work falls into a few buckets:
Special situations — spin-offs, post-reorgs, carve-outs, activist investments, capital allocation inflections, management changes, turnarounds, strategic reviews, stub shares, and plenty of other event-driven setups
Small-cap and mid-cap value — quantitatively cheap businesses that are overlooked, underfollowed, or generally unloved (I do look at large caps, but only when severely out of favor)
Inflection stories — this is perhaps my favorite type of investment thesis; companies where margins, capital allocation, leverage, or general fundamentals are improving before the market fully appreciates it
Beaten down stocks — situations where the narrative is poor, expectations are low, and the market may be missing a more favorable long-term outcome

What makes me unique
Most investment research gives you plenty of information without giving you any real information.
First, my concise approach is a twist on Michael Steinhardt’s 4 thesis elements (the idea, the consensus view, variant perception, and catalyst).
Each writeup includes:
Overview of the business (what they do)
Why it’s interesting (catalysts)
What it’s worth (valuation)
Second, my professional background includes a combination of technical accounting experience, public and private markets investing, and small business acquisition + operations. I currently own and operate a collection of private businesses with a partner (i.e. my “day job”).
Translation = my write-ups include only the most actionable elements (zero fluff) and are written by a combo accountant + investor + operator.
